Books and Documentaries I recommend

Books:
Silent Spring - Rachel Carson.
This book was published in 1962. Despite some issues discussed no longer being relevant, I find that this book really helps with concept. It beautifully displays how everything is connected and destroying on part of an ecosystem effects all of the creatures within it. It also illustrates foolish thinking on part of the government and the lack of public knowledge over decisions regarding pesticides that will ultimately effect their lives.

Eating Animals - Jonathan Foer
An amusing read. Not a boring book by any means. This book highlights the extensive and disgusting problems with factory farming. It makes me proud to be a vegetarian. It is packed full of information that makes you gasp. It's shocking to see what the government fails to tell the public, and how corporations have so much control.

Ecoholic - Adria Vasil
This is a great guide to follow when looking for more sustainable products... it has sections on everything from the kitchen, to pets, to even your sex life! And it's a fun and cute book.

Documentaries

No Impact Man
A Big-City man and his family attempt to make little impact on the Earth over the course of the year, going so far as to not use any electricity (no fridge, or lights on at night, no elevator usage) to walk everywhere, buy all their food fresh from the local market... etc. Inspires you to make a difference with the little things you do.

Food Inc.
This one hit the world with a bit of a storm. It beautifully showcases some aspects of today's very corrupt, very disgusting food systems.

Super Size Me
Everyone has heard of this one. Why do we put food like this in our bodies? It's not even real food. Watch this fascinating and disgusting documentary, and finally be inspired to give up fast food!

Wal-Town
A documentary focusing on the super-power that is Walmart and all of the hidden secrets we don't realize about it, like the information it has on consumers, the amount of GDP it earns, and the way it's workers are treated.

Blue Planet Series
Though these don't cover environmental issues (I really feel like they should... people could watch them thinking that everything is fine with our oceans), they are a beautiful display of the sea, and the creatures that inhabit it. It makes you appreciate and adore the gift of the oceans.

Yes Men Fix the World
A sassy documentary calling out large corporations. There's parts where you'll be so nervous for these gutsy activists you'll be sweating! It really helps show how greedy and efficiency focused our world is, but that we need to make a difference, and it can be simple.
